Upcycling Dining Chairs: From Facebook Marketplace to Modern Design

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of finding a hidden gem on Facebook Marketplace, and that’s exactly how we came across this set of dining chairs for just $100. Designed by a South Australian maker (if you know who it might be, let us know in the comments!), these chairs had so much potential but were definitely in need of a refresh.

The original design featured fabric backs and seats. While the fabric wasn’t entirely bad, the bases were sagging, and let’s be honest, there’s a time and place for fabric dining chairs—and with two young kids, this is not our time! So, we decided to give these beauties a serious glow-up.

Step 1: Stripping Back

The first step was to pull the chairs apart, removing the fabric backs and seats. This left us with the solid timber frames as our starting point. With a bit of sanding, the wood underneath started to reveal its character which is always exciting!

Step 2: Swapping Fabric for Hardwood

To replace the tired fabric, we opted for hardwood. We glued up boards, cut them to size, and made new backs and seats that would sturdy and timeless. The switch to solid timber has completely transformed these chairs, giving them a modern yet classic feel.

For the finish, we used two coats of Fiddes Hardwax Oil, and lightly sanded with 240grit sandpaper in between coats. This finish is silky-smooth and the satin-finish highlights the natural grain of the wood while providing a durable surface that’s perfect for everyday use.

Step 3: The Final Transformation

Once reassembled, the chairs looked unrecognisable from their Facebook Marketplace beginnings. What was once tired and sagging is now a sleek, sustainable set that feels right at home in our space.

Saving furniture like this from ending up in landfill is one of the reasons we love upcycling so much. Not only does it reduce waste, but it’s also a chance to create something entirely unique with its own story.
